Dervins article Qualitative Research in Information Management was a very compacted with content and information. To make it possible for me to read and understand this article I took a few steps. First off I printed it out so that I could annotate on the hard copy. I skimmed over the article first to get a brief overview of what I was going to be reading. Then I read it for a second time which used a highlighter to highlight key concepts of the article . I also used a red pen to mark questions and then tried to find answer to the questions which then I wrote them down on post-its so I could have the answer to the question connected to the article.
There was a lot to digest from this reading. There are many points that I got form. First off she focuses on Sense-making. It also talk about how information is used, it’s not all about what information that you get but it can be effected by how you interrupt it, the context, previous knowledge. Another thing that stuck out to me was Figure 6.1 which is the Learning pit and gap bridged. This stuck out to me cause my site focus on the learning pit a lot and was interesting for me to see it come up in my reading. I like teaching students about the learning pit because it shows students that it will not be easy but that they can do it and it they push through it will make them better. If I had to teach this content to high schoolers I would take a few steps so that they could break it down and gasp all the information from this article. First I would give all students a hard copy if the article show that they could take some of the same steps I took of highlighting key points and using post-it to answers questions they had. After the class has did their own reading I would break them into small groups in which each group would have a small sections of the article to do a quick prestation on using PowerPoint, Prezi, poster, or any preferred form of a prestation. This would make it so that they could breakdown in detail a sections. Also they would get the information delivered from their classmate which might help them notice something they did not when they read the article or answer question they may have.
